Alpha Media is making a retreat from the southeast, striking a deal to sell 18 stations and two translators across four coastal markets to Dick Broadcasting. The sale includes stations in the Greenville-New Bern-Jacksonville, NC; Myrtle Beach, SC; Hilton Head, SC and Savannah, GA markets. Financial terms weren’t immediately available.
“I’ve known [Dick Broadcasting CEO] Allen Dick for many, many years and am thrilled to assist him in growing his company with the sale of these three great markets,” Alpha Media chairman Larry Wilson said in the announcement. “My vision of this industry aligns with Allen’s, which makes me confident these stations and talented employees are in great hands,” he added.
The deal will dramatically recast Dick Broadcasting, which currently owns only two stations in the Greensboro-Winston Salem-High Point, NC market: CHR WKZL (107.5) and classic rock “Rock 92” WKRR.
“This acquisition is a natural next step as we move into the third generation of ownership in the Dick family,” COO Dick Harlow said. He points out that Dick Broadcasting sold a majority of its broadcast properties to Wilson in 2000 when Wilson was building his former company, Citadel Broadcasting. In that deal he paid Dick $300 million for 11 stations in Nashville, Knoxville and Birmingham. “It’s ironic—now 17-plus years later, we expand our footprint by acquiring stations from him,”Harlow said.
Here’s what Dick Broadcasting is buying:
Greenville-New Bern-Jacksonville: CHR “Bob 93.3”WERO, country “The Wolf 92.3/101.1” WQSL/WQZL,“Your Country 95.1” WRNS-FM, modern rock “Rock 105.5” WXQR, sports “960 The Bull” WRNS, and adult standards WANG (1330).

Savannah, GA: classic hip-hop “G-100” WXYY and classic country “98.3 Hank FM” WGCO.
Alpha Media acquired the collection of Coastal Carolina markets in a variety of deals with sellers such as NextMedia and Triad Broadcasting, and through its buyout of Digity. The company is not making a complete retreat from the region; it will still own a cluster in Columbia, SC.
