KNS: Boomsday: Looking back at Knoxville's Labor Day fireworks event

While it’s been gone for three years, it’s hard not to think about Boomsday when Labor Day Weekend arrives in Knoxville.

The former downtown Labor Day fireworks extravaganza delighted thousands of attendees for 28 years with a fireworks show shot off Henley Street Bridge, live music and vendors. 

Boomsday ended in 2015 due to a lack of corporate sponsorship, according to a previous News Sentinel story.

The event began when a group of people from Knoxville radio station STAR 102.1 sought to put together a fireworks show on different day than July 4, according to a previous News Sentinel story.

  1. It came apart when Kim Bumpers, trying to make it a big money maker for VisitKnoxville, pushed away long time sponsers. More and more events are shying away from knoxville, as long as she has anything to do with it.
