For those of you familiar with the Daily Beacon and at large the Office of Student Media, 2019 might look a little different.
The Office of Student Media, now under the direction of no-longer-interim director Jerry Bush, will be forming new departments to help branch out the ways in which Student Media can interact, influence and serve the campus community and greater Knoxville. While the Daily Beacon and the Phoenix literary magazine will function as it always has, two departments of Student Media will come to life.
The first is Lumos. Jack, Jared, Ted, Mitch, Cade, Tae and Bailey are a small group of students meeting with clients on and off campus to produce video content and build advertising campaigns. Operated by students, the communications and marketing company is looking to help give students experience working with real clients on real deadlines.
Along with Lumos, former City News Editor Allie Clouse will lead the magazine department as they produce the Housing Guide, On Rocky Top and new female-focused magazine Honey. Also completely student-run, Allie’s team will focus on building a new name on campus with Honey as they focus on issues on and off campus.
This brings us back to the Beacon. We’re hoping to redefine the core values of the Daily Beacon by branding our new slogan: Bringing the News to Light. Voted on as a staff, we are hoping to shed light on what you as students should hear.
Whether it’s how housing plans to solve unforeseen issues or that you (sadly) won’t get your tuition paid if you get hit by a car or that Asian American students feel unsafe on campus amongst the actions of an Asian Scavenger Hunt, we’re so honored to shed light on stories that you need.
I’m determined to do my best to make sure that the first half of 2019 is the best the Beacon has ever been.
Read on- we’re ready to bring to light what you need to know.
