40 Under 40: From pizza to nonprofits, Ackermann PR's Tommy Smith loves branding

Tommy Smith enjoys sprinkling ideas where they don’t belong. 

The vice president at Ackermann Marketing & PR has 14 years of experience in marketing and advertising and has worked with small businesses to nonprofits to name brands across numerous industries. He has a lot of ideas to share.

“Taking something from banking and applying it to cyber security or taking something from the nonprofit space and applying it to a pizza franchise” is what gets him excited about marketing, he said. “We get to cross pollinate ideas that don’t typically belong in that industry.”

Vice president since 2015, Smith, 37, is responsible for agency and client creative growth strategies. He leads the long-term strategic marketing visioning process with clients and creates brands and advertising campaigns.
He got to know Ackermann as a client while overseeing marketing for ORNL Federal Credit Union. Before that, he worked for seven years as a brand manager for Dell, managing about 20 of its brands.
