SummitMedia has relaunched its classic hits station in Knoxville, WNOX, as “Awesome 93.1,” promising “Totally 80s and More.” The station also adds the syndicated “Ace & TJ Show” to mornings.
“Our consumers want and need an escape, and that’s what this new station delivers,” SummitMedia Executive VP of Programming Randy Chase said in a press release. “From Gen Xers to Millennials, we know these songs will recall great memories. Plus, Ace & TJ have incredible energy and content that perfectly suits SummitMedia Knoxville.”
“Awesome’s” music mix – including core 80s artists such as Madonna, Journey, Duran Duran and Michael Jackson, as well as selected hits from the 90s – positions it closer to Midwest Communications’ Adult Hits WNFZ-FM, the market’s “Jack FM” station with an 80s-90s focus. According to Nielsen Audio, recent ratings show WNOX, which had tied WNFZ for 9th place in the Knoxville market in December 2020, gaining from 2.9 to 3.6 in persons 12+ from December to February, as WNFZ has stayed steady at 2.8 while slipping to 11th.
The high-energy “The Ace & TJ Show” has been on a roll in recent weeks, adding SummitMedia affiliates in Birmingham; Greenville-Spartanburg, SC; Richmond; and Springfield, MO, in addition to Knoxville.
